Electronics are great, but I’ll never go to sea without my paper. Complicated things break, simple things break less. I’ve sailed 12,000 miles with a handheld GPS and it’s great, but I always plotted on paper charts and wrote in the logbook. I frequently would “dead reckon” and pilot visually and then double check with the GPS just so I don’t forget how. The best piece of safety gear ever invented is sitting on your shoulders.
